FILMS

Films during the Fall 2008 term will be screened in room K227, in the Centre for Technology Enhanced Learning at the Barrie Campus.

Screenings begin at 5pm with special facilitation by various professors from the University Partnership Centre. Fair Trade Coffee is generously offered through our local partnership. All films are selected by professors for their relevance to our various university and college level studies, and a desire to engage our community in discussion about our world and our place in it.

WINTER 2009

February 5th

2001, A Space Odyssey

Facilitated by Professor Brent Cotton, Department of General Education

“In 1971, Marshall McLuhan stated “The electronic age…angelizes man, disembodies him. Turns him into software.” Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey is a precursor to this aphorism. As a late 1960’s period piece, 2001 juxtaposes the marvel of the space race with the acknowledgement that each new technology becomes an extension of ourselves. In the film, the most memorable piece of technology is HAL, a state-of-the-art computer who has been programmed not only to communicate, but also to think and feel. Viewers are left to ponder the implications of this technological extension, and question whether circuitry will eventually supersede humanity.”
